Hiring a personal trainer

A personal trainer should motivate you and make working out an enjoyable, educational experience. Be clear to the trainer about what you want to get out of the sessions and this could be the best investment you've ever made. Here's a checklist of things to take into account when choosing a trainer.

1. Certification
Is the trainer certified through a nationally-recognized organization? (ACE, ACSM, CanFit Pro, CPTN or reputable equivalent). Is he/she knowledgeable in physiology, anatomy, biomechanics, kinesiology, or specialties you may be looking for? (Pre or postnatal fitness, injury rehabilitation.) Along with these, your trainer should have CPR and First Aid certification.

2. Referrals
If someone you trust is pleased with the trainer's service, it's likely you'll be too. If you don't have a referral to go by, ask for references -- clients with similar goals. That way, you can call to inquire about their progress and satisfaction.

3. Communication
The trainer should talk with you prior to your visit about your needs and limitations. That way he/she can arrive prepared and ready to make a difference in your life. It's also a good indicator of times to come if the trainer is prompt on arrival.

4. Be informed
To avoid any conflicts or confusion, ask for a list (in writing) of business policies: i.e. cancellation policy, rates, billing procedures. Liability insurance should be available.

5. Knowledge
Your trainer should be a resource for fitness, exercise, nutrition, sport-specific training and lifestyle. If your trainer isn't knowledgeable in an area of concern -- a good trainer will offer to research the information for you and not leave you wondering.

6. Keep track
The trainer should keep a record of your workouts. Progress of your short and long term goals should be shown to you regularly to help and keep you motivated. Tracking progress could include body measurements, cardiovascular improvement, energy levels, weight, strength, and stamina.
