Flu shot facts

Wondering whether or not you should get your flu shot? Find out what medical experts say about the vaccine and antiviral drugs.

By Heather Camlot

Is a flu shot worth the trouble? Yes, according to a recent review that found people who received a flu shot fared better than those who depended on antiviral medication to get well.

In fact, antiviral medications, such as TamiFlu and Relenza, only relieved symptoms half-a-day to one-day earlier than taking no drugs at all. Researchers recommend that healthy adults get their vaccinations so that health professionals can save antiviral treatments for at-risk populations, including people older than 65 years, and anyone over six months of age who may have serious health conditions, diabetes or a suppressed immune system.
