Trendy summer dresses

There's something so fun, flirty and feminine about summer dresses. And while Canadian summers may be short, it's not so short that you can't leave a lasting impression in a dress that looks hot but keeps you cool through June, July and August.

But before you hit the stores, find out what trends are leading the way in dresses for summer 2010. Halina Paprocki, a dress buyer for Melanie Lyne shares tips on the best looks that'll help you to look your best this season.

Homemakers.com: What are the hottest trends for dresses this summer?
Halina Paprocki: First is colour. 2010 summer dresses are in vibrant hues and warm tones: lush yellows, bright oranges, oceanic blues, greens, pinks and reds in a print or a solid. Don't forget classic black-and-white dresses that continue to be timeless staples in any wardrobe.

Second, fabulous detailing created by zippers, soft ruffles, seaming, contrast lining and ruching complement the colourful palette of summer dresses.

And lastly, floral prints play a significant role, whether in a small or large print or as an accent, creating a feminine, bold and flirty statement.

Homemakers.com: What lengths, fabrics and other details are on trend?
HP: You'll find a variety of lengths ranging from above the knee to below the knee in summer's key pieces.

Attention to detail and embellishments add understated touches and glimmering jewel details enhance evening gowns and formal styles.

And finally, fabrics are lightweight and cool in comfortable stretch cottons, matt jersey and lightweight Ponte for day -- and beautiful taffetas, silks and satins for night.

Homemakers.com: What are the looks for daytime? And nighttime?
HP: Looks for daytime include classic shifts and cap-sleeve dresses. Waist details, such as sashes and seaming, help to create chic and office-appropriate silhouettes. Dresses exude subtle sophistication in cream, taupe, grey, black and white.

For nighttime, cocktail dresses and longer gowns are elegant in rich navy, fuchsia and purple. Intricate detailing, in the form of ruching, rosettes, frills and sequins, add a special touch.
