2010 spring coat trends
Spring has sprung and it’s finally time to ditch your bulky winter coat once and for all! Well, at least until next winter... In the meantime, a stylish spring coat is perfect to help you transition your wardrobe from winter to summer. So, what’s hot for spring 2010? We checked in with Robin Keeler, fashion director at Toronto’s Yorkdale Mall to find out what’s in this season.
Spring coats: the trends
This season showcases classic styles with modern updates. Here, Keeler identifies the new looks for spring coats:
Military-inspired jacket
The military-inspired jacket, in khaki, camouflage green or even black, has been around for years, says Keeler. "In addition to being worn over pants, it’s perfect over skirts," she says. "It looks both tailored and feminine in the neat and trim way military uniforms do. Add a ruffled blouse for contrast and edge. Available in various fabrics such as cotton twill, linen and even wool, this is a great layering piece. If the jacket is plain, a wide leather studded belt is the perfect accessory."
The leather jacket
Keeler says that leather is hot again this season and suggests looking for motorcycle jackets, military-inspired coats, bombers and even zip-up hoodies. "They come in an array of exciting shades: metallic grey, cobalt blue, amethyst, bright yellow and white," she says. "Leather is distressed, perforated and gathered."
The trench
"With most clothing classics, my advice is to always look for the simplest styles… that is, until it comes to the trench coat," says Keeler. "Here you want to look for lots of detailing, storm flaps and epaulets (which testify to the coat’s military origins) and lots of great topstitching."
"You will want the coat to fit perfectly but not look skimpy," Keeler advises. "Belts on cuffs and the waist are to be worn tightened (so the rain does not get in) and generous collars flip up for instant attitude. The trench is an investment everyone should make as it looks attractive on every body type. As always, buy the best you can afford. In addition to the classic, traditional styles, the trench is updated with featherweight fabrics, leather, cropped sleeves, ruffles and shorter lengths."
