How to eat locally for the good of the environment

Imported foods can leave a hefty carbon footprint. Find out how you can make a difference by making meals with locally produced ingredients.

By Aileen Brabazon

Greening your meals is a great way to lighten your environmental footprint.

As a first step in eco-eating, avoid food that has travelled from afar. The planes, trains and trucks that deliver food run on -- and emit  -- air-polluting fossil fuels.

Help keep the air cleaner by choosing items grown or raised within a 100-mile radius of your postal code. You can do that by heading to your local farmers market and buying fresh food from nearby farms. By eating locally, you enjoy fresher produce and meat, and help keep your regional economy healthy.
