Point the way to eco-friendly nail polish

Point the way to eco-friendly nail polish

Toxins may be lurking in your favourite nail polish. Find out what to look for in chemical-free nail lacquers.

By Aileen Brabazon

Nail polish may make your hands and feet look dynamite, but what's it doing to the earth or your body?

Many nail varnishes emit air pollutants, such as formaldehyde and toluene (they're responsible for its stinky smell), Adria Vasil reports in her book, Ecoholic (Vintage Canada, 2007).

Inhaling these toxic polish ingredients can potentially damage organs, such as your liver and kidneys. And the acetone in varnish remover is almost as bad.

For the sake of the air and your health, choose nail polishes and removers that are less toxic. Large health food stores often carry a selection of products that are free of harmful chemicals. You can also find the scoop on good polishes (and all cosmetics) at cosmeticsdatabase.com.
