Fall 2009 decorating trends

Ah, you can smell it in the air. Summer's humidity is gone as cool breezes sweep in, tinged with the fragrance of pine and the sound of crispy leaves crunching beneath your feet. When fall arrives outdoors, it's time to welcome the season indoors, too.

So, what trends are leading the way for fall 2009? Eric Berthold, vice president for President's Choice Home reveals what's hot for this cool season.

Fall 2009 decor trends
According to Berthold, this season is about creating a warm and welcoming environment by using inviting textures and patterns.

You can cozy up your environment by incorporating comforting dark woods into your home, plus some of this season's hot decorating schemes:

-Shimmer
-Gold
-Plaid
-Neutral
-Rust and;
-Paisley

Natural elements like wood and bark and earthy colours also help to bring the feeling of the outdoors inside.

Fall 2009 kitchen decor
Technology leads the way when it comes to kitchen decor trends for fall 2009.

Innovative appliances -- large and small -- that save time, money and energy are popular this season.

During a recession, Berthold points out that more and more people stay home and cook, rather than eating expensive meals out. For this reason, a kitchen outfitted with smart appliances and easy-to-use gadgets makes meal prep a breeze.

So, what does your kitchen need so you can kick things up a notch? Berthold recommends, "Ceramic knives, nanotech non-stick glass bakeware, grind and brew coffeemakers, mirrored front appliances and a water purification system."

Fall 2009 bathroom decor trends
As with many rooms in the home, the tendency toward natural, green living continues to be big in bathrooms this season.

Think: Bamboo (the fastest growing plant on earth, which replenishes itself quickly) for both hard surfaces and textiles, towels made from organic cottons and accessories that are made of natural materials for creating your spa-like retreat.

Fall 2009 bedroom trends
It's all about glamour in the bedroom! Fight the season's chill with luxury fabrics and amp up the glam with brightly coloured accessories. "Think: 400-thread-count sheets, luxury faux fur throws, luxurious details and dark wood accents," says Berthold.

Living room trends
This season, bring warmth and comfort into the living room with rich colours and warm fabrics.

Heavy knit throws and cushions in nubby wools not only look inviting but are comfy-cozy for cool nights. According to Berthold, rust, charcoal, brown and cream are popular colours this season and he suggests introducing a berry-motif into your room for that fall feeling. Perhaps a berry wreath over the fireplace?

Don't be afraid to mix modern with traditional, he says. Your style is all part of how you personalize your space.

Must-haves!
Berthold reveals this season's must-have items:

-Statement throw cushions
-Grind and brew coffeemaker
-Ceramic knives
-Wool throws
-Hurricane candle holders
