Why you may have low sex drive
Have you gone from livin' libido loca to a sex life that's lacking in desire and passion? If you're finding it difficult to find your lust for making love, you're not the only one.
"According to the Durex Sexual Wellbeing Global Survey, only 44 per cent of Canadians are satisfied with their sex life,” says Dr. Sari Locker, author of the Complete Idiot’s Guide to Amazing Sex (Alpha, 2005). “And loss of sexual desire is a major contributor to this problem."
It’s normal for your sex drive to ebb and flow in intensity throughout your life. If you and your spouse are satisified with the frequency of your lovemaking, you probably have nothing to worry about. But problems can arise in a relationship when one partner wants sex more often than the other.
What causes low libido?
If something is stealing your sex drive, take some time to consider what the cause of your low libido might be. “Low desire may have emotional, medical or physical causes,” says Locker.
"Medication (such as blood pressure medication, birth control pills and many anti-depressants) may be to blame," Dr. Locker advises. But that's not all. A woman's body changes relating to pregnancy or menopause could be at root of the problem, too. "An imbalance of your body’s natural level of hormones could be causing your low sexual desire."
Locker also cites stress and low self esteem (often linked to poor body image) as possible factors for low libido. But there's help out there: “Desire problems that are rooted in emotions are often best treated by getting into psychotherapy,” Dr. Locker says.
