And they're working together to do so, through the Farmers' Markets of Nova Scotia Cooperative, a group that promotes markets across the province through their partnerships with each other.

If you're looking for the Cape Breton's Farmer's Market, don't look further than The Big Fiddle: The 45-foot high, 10-tonne steel monument to Cape Breton's musical heritage. The Big Fiddle, located on Sydney's Government Wharf, presides over the indoor market. Vendors come weekly to sell a wide variety of locally-produced items including natural highland beef, Berkshire pork, free-range eggs and fruits and vegetables. You'll also find fair trade coffee and chocolate, loose teas, handmade felt hats, Native handicrafts and candles.

The Halifax Farmers' Market, which has been housed in the historic Keith's Brewery Building since 1983, has made some major changes in the last few years. The market moved to brand-new ecological building on the Halifax Waterfront and is now open 6 days per week. While the new building, complete with a green roof, is being built, it's business as usual for the more than 100 vendors who do a brisk trade on Saturday mornings.
Considered to be the oldest continuously operating farmers' market in North America (since 1850), you'll find bedding plants, cut flowers and produce including berries, squash, beets, fresh herbs and wax beans. Vendors offer made-to-order treats such as stir-fries, omelets and fruit-filled crepes. Pick up seasonal decorations -- gourds and pumpkins in the fall, holly in the winter -- here.

The Truro Farmer's Market, located in downtown Truro, is a Saturday morning gathering spot for locals and visitors alike.
