5 Ways to go from Kid's Room to Empty Nester's Dream Space

It happened. The bittersweet realization that house is all yours. Whether it was the journey off to college, the first apartment move, or the acquisition of a new son or daughter-in-law, that old bedroom is all yours. 

Give yourselves some time to let it all sink in. Maybe take a week away alone together, then relish the thought of what that empty bedroom could become.

You could buy new bedding and drapes, add a few well-placed accessories and more mature wall art and call it a luxe guest space. Or you can transform that spare bedroom into the dream space you've been pining for over since long before they flew the coup. 

1) The In-home She Shed

Who says it must be in the backyard? Sewing equipment and craft bins will fit perfectly into that newly emptied closet.

Add a sturdy sewing table or ample-sized desk suitable for the weight and rhythm of a sewing maching. If painting is your jam, make certain the surface wipes easily or will one that will look even cooler when all the paint colors seep into the crevices. 

Find a softer looking, rolling office chair to move about comfortable in from one station to the next. Add some drapes to make it yours and it's your very own atelier!

2) The Dad Cave

Dad's got game so he might as well show it off. Add a single recliner and add items that bring his personality out in his space. Whether it's a classic rock them to display his guitars, or the green aesthetic of the golf club, a bit of paint, a few stand-out personal pieces and a large screen TV is likely it all it needs. 

3) Share Space with a Home Gym

A couple that work out together stays together and good home gym doesn't require large equipment and a thundering treadmill but add one if you'd like. A few yoga mats tucked into the closet along with some free weights and bands and you've got everything you need to get started. 

Stream your favorite fitness influencers on a wall mounted TV to maximize space. Lighting that flatters the image in the mirror is also a must.

4) The Obvious Option - The Home Office

Whether you work at home or would just like to tuck away all the paperwork, pens, and the calculator, a home office is the perfect use for that newly emptied bedroom. 

A good place to start is a desk with drawers and a small-scale file cabinet that also serves as your printer stand. A comfortable office chair will be a nice change to that kitchen table and give a lot more stability than your lap in a reclined position. 

Add an area rug for an added pop of color or a bit of texture. A desk lamp is a good finishing touch. Look for one with charging ports to keep all your devices well charged.

5) They Playroom

Sometimes the best perk of being an empty nester is the arrival of grandchildren. Spoil them with their own space while keeping the clutter out of yours. 

A coloring and craft nook in one corner and a little library in another separates purpose, and in some instances fighting kids. The closet can house bins and cubes filled with smaller toys. The trick is getting the toys back into them. 

Add a few child-sized chairs and bean bags for seating looking for fabrics that wipe clean easily or can be tossed into the washing machine. A futon, or small sleeper sofa is a great addition for overnights, but measure before adding it into what might already be a full space.
