4 Tips on How to Buy the Right Stand for Your TV

You just spent a large chunk of change on a new, flat-screen TV with all the bells and whistles. It makes sense that you want to do anything you can to protect it. The wrong TV stand could be much more dangerous than you’d think. Too small, and your TV is a goner after just one accidental bump. But, before you panic, read these four tips on how to choose the right stand for your TV!

1. Measure TV Width

“That’s easy!”, you say. “It’s a 65-inch TV and it says so right here on the box!” Well now, hold on. The number you see on the box is measuring your TV from corner to corner, not side to side. If you tried to buy a TV stand based off of that number, you definitely would not be buying the right stand for your TV! So, break out a tape measure and jot down the measurement of your TV from one side to the other.

*Note: for some TV stands, you might need to know the depth of your TV to assure you can find the right stand for your TV.

2. Measure TV Height

3. Measure TV Stand Width

Sorry, you’re not done measuring quite yet, but at least this one you can measure while sitting down. Position your couch or seat wherever it will be when you’re actually viewing the TV. Go ahead and take a seat wherever you would if you would normally watch the screen. Now, measure the distance from the floor to your eyes and write that down. It is recommended that the lower half of the TV should be level with your line of sight while seated. Therefore, the shelf on which the TV sits should be no lower than 12 inches below that measurement. For readers with families, measure the average viewing height of everyone and use that number. This number will help you find the right stand for your TV!

*Expert Advice: The best viewing distance for the TV screen is approximately double your screen size. So, if you have a 60-inch TV, you will want the screen to be placed 120 inches from your viewing area.

The right stand for your TV will be at least a few inches wider than your TV. Check out this table to find the perfect TV stand size based on your TV size to make your shopping experience even simpler!

*Please note that the chart above is only to be taken as a general recommendation and not a strict guideline. As always, use sound judgment when arranging TVs, TV stands and other heavy furniture items!

4. Consider TV Stand Types

Now that you have a better idea of where your TV will be displayed, you can start thinking about what type of TV stand is right for your TV. If you want a more minimalist style, you’d be most satisfied with a stand or console.
