How to Select the Perfect Mattress

Selecting the perfect mattress can be overwhelming. with lots of options and lots of brands, Homemakers wants to help you meet your match! We asked our sales manager Jeff to help us out. He suggests, “When shopping for mattresses, trust your body when it comes to the feel. Asking friends what was good for them, may not be good for you as everyone has a different need when it comes to mattresses.” So, with that here are a few things to think about.

The who, what and why

The first thing to think about is who is this mattress for? Is it just you or you + a partner? This can help determine size. Next ask what do you have now? Do you like it, what brings you here to need a new mattress? For instance, if you have a firm mattress that hurts your body, maybe try a soft or medium feel.

Next ask why are you replacing it, what do you want to find in a new mattress? We all want different things out of a mattress, and this can help shrink your mattress pool.

Who are you buying a mattress for?

Choosing how you sleep

The next step in selecting a mattress is deciding what kind of sleeper you are. Are you a side sleeper, back sleeper, stomach or all of the above. If you are a side sleeper, an extra soft, soft, or medium firmness would be best for you? Figuring this out can be a helpful step into shrinking your mattress pool. To learn more about this read our Best Mattress for your sleeping position blog. It’s best to have a few ideas in mind after this step.

Decide on a price range

This can be the tricky part of mattress selecting. How much are you willing to spend on a mattress? They are expensive, but you will get your money’s worth out it. Homemakers has a widevariety of options and something for every budget. There are certain brands cheaper than others. The most expensive queen mattress, the Tempur-Pedic Lux Breeze 2.0 is at $5,599 and the least expensive is the Omaha Elegante II at $169. So, there is a lot of wiggle room between those mattresses. If you are looking for luxury mattress, we suggest looking into a Tempur-Pedic, Stearns and Foster, or a Beautyrest Black.

Decide on a mattress type

A mattress type is important for what change you want to make in buying. These are classified into two groups: type and comfort level. In type of mattress, it’s foam, hybrid, and innerspring. For the comfort level its extra firm, firm, medium, plush, and ultra-plush. Learn more about this in our best mattress for your sleeping position blog.

The top seller mattress types would be inner spring and hybrid. If you are shopping in-store we showcase all this information for each mattress. Just look above the mattress on the wall, and it will show you the type, pressure relief, support, and comfort.

Choosing a brand

This can also go hand in hand with price range and mattress type. The brand you choose is very important. You might have a specific brand in mind before even selecting a mattress. We offer some of the best brands at Homemakers.

Do you need a box spring

Jeff says, “A lot of customers get confused on whether their mattress needs a box spring or not. The answer is, it depends on what type of frame you are putting it on.” You will need a box spring if you have a few slats. You will not need a box spring if you have multiple slats that are inches apart, a platform, or an adjustable base.

Today, box springs are designed to support the mattress. But in the past, they were designed to work in combination with the mattress, as a sort of shock absorber. According to Jeff, “As more people are buying platform beds and adjustable bases, these things do not flex. So, when a customer bought a mattress that was displayed with a working box spring, the mattress felt more firm than putting them on a platform bed or adjustable base.” Today, mattresses are built to do all the work for a box spring. They are built non-flippable so the bottom has a solid foundation, the middle is the shock absorption, and the top is conforming and pressure-relieving.

Adjustable bases are also popular now. They work via a remote. It has some unique features such as USB charging, memory features, massage, lumbar support and some even communicate on how you sleep and how to get better sleep.

Some things to remember when buying

When buying and bringing your new mattress home. Jeff suggests, “Floor models have been laid on by many people and are already broken in. Your new mattresses will be firmer than the floor model, this is normal. Give it at least 30 days to break in, longer if it’s a firm model.”

At Homemakers we offer a sleep guarantee. So, you can try the mattress for 120 days and if it isn’t working you can bring it back and you have a onetime exchange for another mattress. To learn more about this ask one of the sales associates or learn more on our website.
