How to Wrap Furniture to Protect It While Moving

Moving can be stressful and prepping can seem like an impossible task. How do you wrap a bed or dining room table? If you follow these steps, you can learn how to wrap furniture and move it easily without damaging it. Most items will only need moving blankets, bubble wrap and packing tape for all the added protection they can get before moving.

How to Wrap a Sofa

Use thick, quilted moving blankets to provide extra padding and protection. Place the blankets over and around the sofa until it’s entirely covered and no fabric or leather is exposed. Wrap packing tape tightly around the sofa to secure the blankets. Tilt the sofa upwards to fold the blankets underneath the sofa. Secure the blankets from end to end with packing tape. Shrink wrap the entire sofa for an added layer of protection to keep moisture and dirt out that can ruin the sofa during the move.

How to Wrap a Table & Chairs

Remove the legs from the table for easier transport. If the legs are not removable, wrap them in bubble wrap for protection. Remove the table leaf if applicable, wrap in moving blankets and secure with packing tape. Wrap the tabletop with moving blankets until surface is covered. If the tabletop is glass, place bubble wrap over the moving blankets and secure both with packing tape. Remove the legs of the chairs if possible to make packing the chairs away easier. Wrap the legs with paper before bubble wrap or packing tape to keep out moisture. Wrap the chairs in a moving blanket and secure with packing tape.

How to Wrap a Dresser

It’s best to move a dresser with the drawers inside so you can wrap and protect them for moving. If the dresser is too heavy, you can take the drawers out to lighten the load. Remove smaller items like pens, scissors and other “junk drawer” items and pack them away in a box. Clothing items like socks are fine to stay in the drawers. If the dresser has a mirror, remove it and place tape in an “X” to protect the glass. Wrap the mirror with paper padding or moving blankets, secure with packing tape and cover in cardboard for an added layer of protection. Wrap the entire dresser in moving blankets and secure with plastic wrap.

How to Wrap a Mattress & Bed

Use specific sized mattress bags for the mattress and box spring that will protect them from water, dust and general moving damage. Once the mattress and box spring have been placed in bags, dissemble the bed frame and secure the small parts in a bag. Wrap the bed frame and headboard in bubble wrap and moving blankets to keep the pieces more protected from dents and scratches. Secure with packing tape or plastic wrap.

How to Wrap a Flat Screen TV & Entertainment Center

If you have the original box, pack the flat screen and remote in the box. If not, wrap the screen in a moving blanket and bubble wrap and secure with packing tape. Most larger entertainment centers can be taken apart into several pieces to make moving them easier. Empty the entertainment center and pack items away in a box. Remove all the drawers and secure the doors closed with rope or tape. Take the entertainment center apart and wrap each section in moving blankets, then secure with packing tape. If the entertainment center has glass, place cardboard over the moving blankets for another layer of protection.
